About this deal

I guess it is reflective of our desire to see and compartmentalise the world into black and white as opposed to the shade of grey that exists in. I especially like the illustration of the gate of Port Blacksand near the beginning, and the wonderful image of the Goblin-like Bays playing Bays’ Ball at entry 40. This is a solo outing from Ian Livingstone, who devised some of the series' best adventures, and it's another winner. Right at the very end, you have to choose to make a potion out of three combinations of ingredients, and you have nothing to go on other than just attempting to pick the right one.

It was later republished by Wizard Books in 2002 and 2010, and again in 2017 by Scholastic Books with new illustrations by Vlado Krizan. However, the player does not start with a shield, and may not have acquired one by this stage of the adventure. It was certainly fun, though, and once again achieved the goal of keeping me busy on a dull day in lockdown. This first part of the game was enjoyable and moderately challenging in places - there were a few locations where things could go badly wrong for you, and I benefitted in one place by making what doesn't immediately look like a wise move. Whenever we are lacking in inspiration for a session or campaign, spending time with a Fighting Fantasy book is not only fun and satisfying, but also a helpful window into the mind of some of the most reknowned fantasy authors of all time, acting as your personal GM. I would love a pc compendioum of every FF book on pc with scrolling text, online dice, background pictures, funky music and a bit of editing so if you need key items you can backtrack sections. Firstly you must find the wizard who will tell you to find some items, then you must take those items to kill the Big Bad.

I feel future entries in the series will struggle to match City of Thieves for atmosphere, playability and excitement. The book is full of traps and often times there is no way to know which outcome is favorable and which - not. On the way to the silversmith, though, I tried to help an injured boy who was lying sobbing in the road. In 1982, with Steve Jackson, he wrote the first of the Fighting Fantasy™ Gamebooks which eventually sold over 15 million copies in 23 languages. Furthermore, all pre-generated characters start with 6 Meals of Provisions, while a player-generated character would start with 10.While the majority of the book is set in Port Blacksand, it moves away from the other books slightly in that the end game begins once you have left Port Blacksand. It's well-written, atmospheric, tense, and sufficiently difficult without falling into frustrating or cheating. Later in the book you're asked if you have an iron key, which is obviously not meaning the same one.
