About this deal

Stan Grant is the Vice Chancellor’s Chair of Australian-Indigenous Belonging at Charles Sturt University and the ABC‘s International Affairs Analyst. For generations, Christian communities have meditated upon the seven last words of Jesus on the cross .

The Holt brothers arrive at the house of Sheriff Dante Romero, intending to steal the hundreds of thousands of dollars in his safe.

As the introduction states, when dusk falls upon a person’s life, the words they speak gain an added significance. In academic supervisions and informal discussion groups, I have loved exploring with students of all faiths and none the relationship and tension between faith and doubt. The Holts are revealed as a dysfunctional family kept in poverty by their gambling addict father Bear. On 12 January, the Intellectual Forum hosted a book launch for Dr Paul Dominiak's new book on religious doubt, The Falling of Dusk.

After serving his curacy in the Diocese of York, Paul spent eight years in higher education chaplaincy in Cambridge, first as Chaplain at Trinity College and then as Dean of Chapel at Jesus College. This book is based around seven chapters, representing the celebrated Seven Last Words of Jesus which have long been a popular devotion (even set to music by Haydn), but Dominiak has given these Seven Last Words an entirely original interpretation to make this perfect Lent reading. The paragraphs are rather long, which makes it harder to pause to let something sink in, but they contain a wealth of things to discuss and follow up. The gameplay of As Dusk Falls revolves around interactive storytelling, as well as novel techniques used to gauge consensus among players for pivotal narrative decisions when playing co-operatively in its multiplayer modes. Development was led by creative director Caroline Marchal, who was previously employed by Quantic Dream as a designer for the company's titles Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls. For generations, Christian communities have meditated upon the seven last words of Jesus on the Cross.

On their way through Two Rock, Arizona they are involved in a car accident with the Holt brothers, Tyler, Dale, and Jay, and their car is left immobile. In an age of uncertainty and suspicion, Paul Dominiak's new book, The Falling of Dusk, explores how each of the seven last words attends to doubt as the refining fire of faith, rather than as its enemy. The black book details Romero's corrupt dealings including bribes and criminal money, all held in a single offshore account. Throughout the book, there is an open-hearted generosity of spirit, and a strong faith in the way the Crucifixion demonstrates God's redemptive love. This is especially important if the book is marketed as a Lent Book, because such books are often added into already busy lives. Each chapter considers one last word spoken on the cross, unpacking why Christians should embrace suspicious doubt, and how a suspicious Christianity might challenge doubters.
