About this deal

The Hummingbird flitting around the flower is a powerfully attractive image and more than makes up for its low piece count. Originally hand-crafted with bricks from a wide variety of LEGO sets, LEGO fan and bird enthusiast Thomas Poulsom pieced together a series of beautiful British birds as a tribute to the natural world that he wants to bring more attention to. Now you can build your own tribute to this exceptional flower with this LEGO® rendition of the eye-catching house plant. The back of the manual has the same illustration as the back of the box except that it doesn’t have all that Ideas branding obscuring the pretty pictures. If you like Super Heroes or grand buildings, this set might not feel like it contains a lot of value.

I think it was a way for Lego to subversively tap the creative knowledge of millions of people for FREE.

Shaft 12M (Transparent) Something I would like to point out that some ‘Medium Blue’ pieces seem to have two different shades in this set.

This set was designed by the very talented Steen Sig Andersen who has been with The LEGO Group for a very long time and it really shows. Attached to the base is also a printed tile with the scientific name of each bird, which I think is a cool little touch. I don't like that the Technic axle wiggles, I feel they are under a lot of pressure underneath the weight of the model.Another example is the Technic axle going through the underside of the Robin could have been transparent, now it seems as if it's part of the Robin. The Blue Jay’s only bizarre fault is his legs, which is mostly constructed out of Technic parts and are fused to the platform that it’s perched upon. Melding LEGO and Technic in the most ingenious ways, the build is especially challenging but rewarding, especially when you see the functions in action! I haven’t made a decision yet but I’ll be sure to promise that the quality and integrity of the blog won’t dip at all. The only thing I wasn't thrilled about was the base where the "stick" on the birds go, putting it through the 2 holes vs a more solid connection seemed like they will fall out at times.

So while you may have a great design and it may well be spectacular, popular and a shoe-in, it’s certainly no guarantee that you’ll see yourself in a Lego ideas booklet with the set nor a dollar from the sales. Put down your binoculars and get closer to nature with these intricate LEGO® models of well-known birds! Birds is a wonderful breath of fresh air to LEGO Ideas and I believe is a shot in the arm to the Ideas ethos: providing a platform for creative fan-made models to become retail LEGO sets. Over that last few years Birds has been a particularly good investment for Ideas collectors with an annualized growth of upwards of 10.Each print is made using Lego letterpress, combining individual building blocks into stamps to recreate the birds’ shapes and patterns, a technique perfected over the past decade by his frequent collaborator, the artist Martijn van der Blom. The flowers and leaves can be repositioned, allowing you to style the plant and create your own display, and there are even a few surprises if you look carefully enough – do you see the little purple LEGO swords used to make the flower’s stamens? While sure, each green-lit product costs them a small percentage going to the person who came up with the design, but think of everything else that’s out there.
