About this deal

Madonna in A Fur Coat , first published in 1943, is his best loved work and a touchstone of Turkish literary culture which continues to resonate profoundly with readers young and old today. But with this book in their hands, they can see that a story that is true to itself, and honest about love, can travel through walls. He ends up at Wannsee, and his thoughts are occupied with questions of intimacy and a meaning in life as he thinks how Heinrich von Kleist and his lover committed suicide together at the very view, and he decides to go back to Maria's house. recreates a vanished era and dramatises a doomed relationship, and does so with verve, depth and poignancy. After serving as a teacher in Yozgat for one year, he earned a fellowship from the Ministry of National Education and studied in Germany from 1928 to 1930.

There he finds a sick Maria, who is finally convinced that Raif is not like any other man and actually is in love with her. After proving his allegiance to Atatürk by writing the poem "Benim Aşkım" (literally: My Love or My Passion), he was assigned to the publications division at the Ministry of National Education. Decades later, when Madonna in a Fur Coat became the sort of book that passed from friend to friend, the literary establishment continued to ignore it. Ali’s murder, allegedly at the hands of an offended patriot, was echoed by the 2007 murder of the Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink. Maria too decides to leave Berlin to live with her mother in Prague, until Raif settles in Turkey and invites her to live with him.A tale of young love and disenchantment, of missed opportunities and passion's elusive, flickering flame . The guy is on his death bed and the story is supposed to explain why hes so shy and build intrigue but its fails.

Yet when Raif dies in poverty-stricken circumstances surrounded by bickering family, his diary comes to light. The works for which he was most admired in his time were imbued by his dreams for the common man, and rooted in his knowledge of the injustices they suffered. The next day, the narrator goes to Raif's house to give back the notebook and talk, but Raif has died.During his lifetime, and even after his death, Ali was publicly taunted for failing to act like a “real man”. the story conveyns the depth and complexity of human mind and feelings, mystery of love, doubts and loneliness. Hardly a day passes without his saying what a woman should be, and what a man – a real man – should do to keep her in her place. It has taken more than 70 years, says Genç, but at last Ali is having his revenge – not just in Turkish, but in English, too. They are only too aware that the space for free expression, and even free thought, is diminishing every day.

He moved from Ankara to Istanbul, to be drawn into the struggle against the fascists then dominating Turkey’s single party state.

Here he meets the sickly, affectless Raif Bey, who is, we’re told, “the sort of man who causes us to ask ourselves: “What do they live for?
