Aeration is best done when the lawn is damp, but not soaked. This will make it a bit easier to make the necessary holes, but ensures that these holes do not collapse immediately if the soil is extremely wet. How deep should I aerate my lawn? Walk behind aerators are often sold as lawn scarifiers. You need to be careful here, as while lawn scarifiers do a great job dethatching your lawn, their spikes don’t penetrate as deep as most other aerators. These types of aerators are best suited to those with small gardens as they do require a bit of manual work, but are well worth it because they are cheaper than electric/petrol machines. You can either use a normal garden pitch fork or hollow tine pitch fork to make the holes (with the pitch fork you’ll get little spikes in the ground, whereas with the hollow tines you’ll dig up plugs of turf). Hollow tines will open up the soil much more effectively so if your soil is heavily compacted or if you want to do a more thorough job then it is better to go with this option. This particular machine is a lawn scarifier by default, but has a separate drum you can interchange that is designed specifically for aerating your lawn. Swapping the drums is quite easy – they’re secured in place with an Allen key. However, this electric aerator doesn’t penetrate as deep as many other options. The deepest you can set it to is -9mm below the surface, and you can also set the lawn scarifier up at a working depth of -3mm or +3mm.

Removing plugs of soil can also help with drainage in compacted ground. If the ground is too compact, water can end up sitting on top of the soil, unable to drain. Not only can this make the garden unpleasant to walk in, but it can damage the grass and soil. Removing plugs of soil will help water drain better. The thing about these electric aerators and scarifiers is that they are usually more powerful than people expect and are not refined tools designed for poking small, unnoticeable holes in the grass. Powered electric aerators are similar in size and shape to rolling aerators. However, an electric aerator requires much less effort to use, and are much more efficient.
